A Closer Look at the Banking Industry’s Evolution and Future Trends
In the latest episode of Así Las Cosas, a podcast by Ferraiuoli, host Maristella Collazo-Soto, Capital Member and Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group, sits down with Caleb Navarro, Senior Vice President at FirstBank, to discuss the world of banking in Puerto Rico. With over two decades of experience in the financial sector, Caleb shares his expert insights into how the industry has transformed and what lies ahead for banks and consumers alike.
The Evolution of Puerto Rico’s Banking Sector
Caleb’s journey through the financial world began with an internship at Banco Popular, where he gained invaluable experience across various roles, from commercial banking and investment services to finance and individual credit management. His career path eventually led him to FirstBank, where he now oversees the Prime Banking division, catering to high-net-worth individuals, government portfolios, and commercial clients, including managing operations in the Dominican Republic.
Reflecting on the past 20 years, Caleb notes a dramatic shift in the banking scene of Puerto Rico. “When I started, there were over 12 banks on the island. Today, only four remain, three of which are legacy institutions,” he explains. This consolidation, driven by regulatory changes, economic challenges, and technological advancements, has reshaped how banks operate and serve their clients.
Adapting to a Digital-First World
One of the most significant changes in the industry is the adoption of technology. Caleb humorously recalls a time before online banking and social media, contrasting it with today’s tech-driven environment. He emphasizes that technology is no longer just a back-office tool but a crucial element of customer service and competitive advantage.
The rise of AI, digital banking, and fintech solutions is not just a trend; it’s a paradigm shift. Banks must invest heavily in technology, systems, and talent to stay relevant, Caleb says. His perspective highlights the growing importance of digital transformation, especially as new players enter the market with innovative, tech-centric models.
New Challenges and Opportunities
For Caleb, the future of Puerto Rico’s banking sector lies in balancing traditional banking values with modern innovations. He foresees a continued focus on integrating AI to improve decision-making processes, optimize operations, and enhance customer experiences.
With the global economy normalizing post-pandemic, Caleb also discusses the impact of high interest rates, inflation control measures by the Federal Reserve, and how these factors influence local investments. Despite challenges, he remains optimistic about the strong appetite for capital investments in Puerto Rico, particularly in infrastructure and development projects.
